Queyras can be visited during two seasons each year: from late December to late March for snow, and from mid-June to mid-September for hiking. In between, the mountain passes close, as do the resorts, and most hotels, including Alta Peyra, take a break. Here is what each month is like, to help you choose yours.
With 300 days of sunshine a year and an elevation among the highest in the Alps, Queyras has a climate all of its own. Winters are cold and dry, snow lasts thanks to the altitude, and summers remain cool at night even when Provence is sweltering.
The season also depends on the roads. The Agnel Pass and Izoard Pass generally open in June and close with the first heavy snowfalls, often in October or November. The road from Guillestre to Saint-Véran remains open all year round, with winter equipment required from 1 November to 31 March.
In between comes the off-season. From April to May, the resorts and passes are closed, the snow melts, and most accommodation providers take a break. In October, the larches turn golden yellow—a rare spectacle—but the passes close with the first snowfalls and few places remain open. November is the quietest time of year.
Winter, from December to March
December kicks off the season with the opening of the resorts, and the festive season is the busiest period. January is the coldest and often the quietest month outside school holidays, with the most reliable snow. February brings together school holidays from all three zones, so book early. March is the month for regular visitors: the days grow longer, the sun warms the terraces, the snow remains good at altitude, and prices drop after the holidays. The hotel closes on 28 March, with the resorts following shortly afterwards.
Summer, from June to September
June opens the passes and mountain huts, with flowering meadows and few visitors, though snow still remains on the highest crossings. July and August are high season, with trails, lakes, markets and shuttle buses to the Chapel of Clausis. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so set off early. For many, September is the most beautiful month: visitors have left, the sky is at its most stable of the year, nights are perfect for stargazing, and the larches begin to turn golden. The hotel closes on 19 September.
Frequently asked questions
When should I book for the Christmas and February holidays?
Two to three months in advance, as school holiday dates fill up quickly throughout the valley.
When can you see the stars in Queyras?
All year round, on clear, moonless nights. September and winter offer the most stable skies, and the Saint-Véran Observatory offers observing nights.

It is possible, but complicated: most accommodation and resorts are closed in April, May, October and November. Hotel Alta Peyra is open from 18 December to 28 March and from 11 June to 19 September.

Days are mild, often above 20°C, but temperatures quickly drop below 10°C in the evening. A jumper and jacket are enough.
